BRAZIL

The BEAT exhibition is a sustainable art project that will happen simultaneously in Brazil and the UK. All flat artworks will be placed in repurposed CD cases,

highlighting the indiscriminate use of plastics that are continually discarded by a society perpetually enticed to purchase new products in the name of progress.

The Brazilian side unites 53 artists from 24 countries, each contributing their unique perspectives. The artworks, encapsulated within these transparent relics

of the digital age, serve as poignant reminders of the environmental impact of our throwaway culture. They advocate for a more sustainable future, urging

society to rethink and reduce its reliance on disposable plastics.

Curated by Lorrain Mailer – UK | Juliana Lauletta – Brazil It is a collaboration between Ashford Visual Artists and Artly Mix.

The Beat arose out of an Instagram project@2024beat devised by Ashford Visual Artists following on from the phenomenal success of Within the Limitations @withinthelimitations, where over 700 submissions were received from over 28 countries worldwide.

Both these exhibitions can now be seen together curated with display units and plinths made from the compact disc cases, designed by Lorrain.

The focus in 2024 has expanded to utilise the clear compact disc cases, as the frame to contain two dimensional artwork with the open call Within the Limitations in February followed with The Beat in October, where small sculptures are placed in and on plinths constructed from multi coloured compact disc cases.

Ashford Visual Artists is an artist collective that aims to promote, encourage and enable visual arts by facilitating artists with their time freely given. As an artist-led, voluntary collective it relies solely on donations and sponsorship for its funds.

Lorrain Mailer is a visual artist based near Ashford. Inspired by the ways in which every day plastic objects can be transformed to produce thought provoking and impactive installations.

Artly Mix is curated by Juliana Lauletta, a visual artist, working with fibre optics, sound and film and promoting art in her gallery and sound studio in São Paulo, Brazil.

Lorrain Mailer uses chrome compact discs in her installations as statements about non-recyclable, indelible and permanent waste. These two installations of collaborative artworks seen at Kaleidoscope have come about as a solution on how to reuse and appropriate the cast-off compact disc cases from a series of site-specific installations started in 2023.

Each artwork comprised of over four to eight thousand compact discs, placed in various locations to highlight the pervasive concentration of non-biodegradable plastics discarded by a society constantly enticed to purchase new products, in the name of progress. These wonders of technology, illustrate the investment of billions around the turn of the millennium, which now, although obsolete, marks another line in the sedimentary geology that humans are leaving as part of the Anthropocene epoch.
