Call Out for Art Be included in WHY?

I am delighted to announce my  Solo Show & Residency at Kaleidoscope Art Gallery, Sevenoaks with call-out for collaborative work to include in an installation during the residency. Prep at home, collect from me or participate during the show.

WHY? It’s a small word with such potentially huge questions. We start out as children asking Why? Often over and over until we are as satisfied with the answers as we can be.

Now I feel most of my questions are not possible to answer, let alone solve, without universal and unilateral commitment. Unfortunately, I firmly believe this won’t happen, and certainly not, in my lifetime.

My WHY? will be with different perspectives and reasons to others but I hope it may still resonate and potentially provoke more questions WHY?

Call Out for Art Be included in WHY?

As explained briefly above my WHY? will be different to yours.

Here’s my invitation to You, your family, friends, in fact, anyone who wants to be included in an ongoing installation throughout my residency.

Here’s an example of one of my many questions WHY?

Here’s How

Example of 1.Cut Out, 2.Silhouette and 3.WHY?^ ©copyright Andrea Coltman 2025

Using an A4 sheet of card or thick paper draw or trace an outline silhouette, cut it out and fill the shape with your WHY?**

The card or paper may be suspended as part of the installation, so it needs to keep its shape. It can be 3D, double-sided.

The filled silhouette can be as abstract or figurative as you wish from drawing, painting, collage, textile,

recycled material etc…no limits!!! I can also provide printed outlines to trace.

The only criteria is that you use your imagination. Nothing is right or wrong.

BUT

Please stick within the limits of A4

You can create your WHY? before the show and drop it in to the gallery from 18th November or create

something during the show. I will have examples and card to take away or create in the gallery.

Alternatively you can send your piece to me:

Andrea Coltman, Inukshuk, Pound Lane, Knockholt, Kent, TN14 7ND

Got more that one WHY?

No Problem, No Limits….But only one piece is guaranteed to be included

**if you’re feeling stuck simply contact me Andrea @andreacoltman.com…with the subject line WHY?

If you would like your piece returned either collect from the gallery on 8th Dec by 12 noon or

please include a stamped addressed envelope

Details from a painting to be shown in the gallery in November.

I hope this triggers some creative ideas …

Andrea Coltman

Artist statement “I don’t know how to love a place…”

Andrea Coltman has always felt displaced due to her family escaping from Hungary in 1956. Belonging nowhere, she is a nomadic observer drawn to capturing snapshots of transitional locations through painting initially inspired by The Dutch Masters as a young child.

Absorbed with the notion of places and spaces of transition, Andrea’s works questions places of constant transformation drawing on her own movements. There are connections and disconnections revealing a state of flux, the crossing of physical and metaphorical boundaries, discovering places of change whilst the artist moves between material, physical and emotional states.

Combining figuration and abstraction, Andrea responds to the passer-by and the environment. Adding hi-vis linear systems, editing, re-editing, duplicating, interpreting, and re-interpreting the literal context is part of her process. The use of repetition in the work is thematic, alluding to the cyclical nature of her daily life. Precision is implied, imperfections arise, and unexpected narratives unravel with dystopian overtones.

Andrea reflects psychologically on the everyday, overlooked instant or object. She is drawn to the ephemeral, the split second, a passage through a place or environment. The artist is a rootless wanderer, and wonderer’, a 21st Century Flâneuse.

Andrea is a London and Kent based artist who graduated with an MFA from UAL, London in 2017.

Studio Address: Thames-Side Studio, Harrington Way, London SE18 5NR
